Henry Hudson was an explorer in the early 1600's. He explored a part of New York which today is known as the Hudson River. Hudson also made previous voyages before he discovered the river. He tried searching for a northern route between Europe and Asia. He set sail two times for this mission. They all ended up the same way, failure in finding the route. On his third voyage, he was forced to re-route on his ship called The Half Moon because he hit ice and cold waters. He was forced to turn south and he sailed to an area called today, the Hudson River. Did you know Hudson was not the first explorer to explore the Hudson River? DeVerrezano sailed by that area in 1524. But, the river was named after Hudson anyway.

Before Hudson sailed on the Half Moon, he sailed on a different ship called the Hopewell. That departed on my special day, May 1st. Henry Hudson was a born English explorer, but sailed for the Dutch. He sailed for the Dutch West India Company in search of the northeastern passage.
